Looks like 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will hit the bench this week as he’s out with a calf injury, making way for rookie Trey Lance to start at QB against the Arizona Cardinals, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan as reported by BR.
Garopollo, 29, played barely six games last year because of an ankle injury. Before that, he helped the 49ers go to the Super Bowl in the 2019 season. And before that, he was injured with a torn ACL and only played three games in all of 2018.
So needless to say, Garopollo seems to be injury-prone and if Trey Lance performs well, could be the future of the franchise. Lance could also be a complete bust, but only time under center will determine that factor.
Lance was picked third overall in the 2021 NFL draft and the 49ers are probably hoping he plays like a top draft pick.
It’s unclear how long Garopollo could be out with injury, but if Trey Lance impresses everyone, then the bench and a clipboard could be Garopollo’s new best friends.
TREY LANCE WAS A STUD IN COLLEGE, but that doesn’t mean squat when you crossover to the NFL.
Will Trey Lance and the 49ers upset undefeated Arizona Cardinals and Kyler Murray?
