Multiple news outlets have identified Jashanpreet Singh, a 21-year-old Indian national, as the truck driver accused in a multi-vehicle crash that occurred on Interstate 10 in Ontario, California, in October 2025. Singh was allegedly under the influence of methamphetamine and fentanyl when his semi-truck plowed into slow-moving traffic, resulting in three deaths and multiple injuries. According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Singh entered the U.S. illegally in 2022. The crash sparked a political and social debate concerning immigration policies and commercial driver's licenses for non-citizens. Singh pleaded not guilty to several charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of drugs. His public defender requested a Punjabi interpreter for a court appearance, revealing that Singh does not speak English fluently despite having obtained a commercial driver's license. Following the incident, a debate arose among Sikh-Americans over calls for Sikh organizations not to help fund Singh's legal fees.
