In 2021, Katalin Metro, a 74-year-old hiker, received a $450,000 settlement from the City of Phoenix after a helicopter rescue in 2019 left her spinning uncontrollably in mid-air. In June 2019, Metro was hiking on Piestewa Peak and broke her nose after a fall. According to reports, she was disoriented but initially did not want an airlift rescue. Botched rescue: Phoenix firefighters decided to proceed with a helicopter extraction. As Metro was being lifted off the mountain in a stretcher basket, a line that was supposed to prevent it from spinning malfunctioned. The basket began rotating wildly, spinning more than 150 times for nearly a minute as rescuers tried to regain control. The shocking and dizzying footage of the rescue went viral, drawing global attention. Lawsuit and settlement: Metro and her husband filed a notice of claim against the City of Phoenix, alleging that the flawed rescue caused her additional injuries and trauma. In December 2021, the Phoenix City Council unanimously approved a $450,000 settlement to compensate her for the ordeal.
