You gotta love and hate this trending sports story all at the same time. Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher is expected to take a $76 million buy out to take a hike. This is nearly triple the previously highest known coaching buyout at any public school. Pretty crazy right? Imagine getting paid millions to NOT WORK! BOOM! EPIC.
Fisher will be a very rich man for a very dumb reason. Would you be a happy millionaire going home and knowing you didn’t reach your potential, which sounds like the reason Texas A&M wants to cut ties. Or would you want some dignity doing a good job and possibly taking less money? I don’t know about you, but my dignity gets thrown further out the window with every million that lands in my bank account. Can you tell I’m not a millionaire?
What happened with Texas A&M coach Jim Fisher? Well, whoever drafted his contract is an all-star. Fisher is owed $19.2 million in the next 60 days, then he’ll be paid $7.2 million every year through 2031. This man doesn’t ever have to work another day in his life. According to the contract, there’s no way to offset or mitigate these payments and they’ll begin 120 days after he gets fired. This is insanity and hilarious at the same time. Who’s THIS STUPID to agree to pay a man to go away? Sounds like Texas A&M needs to get someone else to review the next coaching contracts.
ESPN reported the following on coach Fisher’s buyout, saying the following in a sports story about it:
“After very careful analysis of all the components related to Texas A&M football, I recommended to President [Mark] Welsh and then Chancellor [John] Sharp that a change in the leadership of the program was necessary in order for Aggie football to reach our full potential and they accepted my decision,” Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork said in a statement. “We appreciate Coach Fisher’s time here at Texas A&M and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
Fisher was 45-25 in six seasons at Texas A&M, and he signed a new 10-year contract with $95 million guaranteed in 2021. That deal was given, in part, because of the potential at the time of Fisher leaving for LSU.
So coach Fisher has a winning record, but it’s not good enough? OK, sure, pay the man millions to go home and bring in a new coach? But you still have the same players on the field, so what exactly does this accomplish? I honestly don’t even know. Maybe Fisher butted heads with someone in the higher ups and we don’t know about it. I’m not sure… ESPN’s report continued:
Fisher was informed of the school’s decision in a meeting Sunday morning, sources told ESPN. Associate head coach Elijah Robinson will serve as the Aggies’ interim coach. The move comes in the wake of Texas A&M (6-4, 4-3 SEC) winning 51-10 against Mississippi State on Saturday, but sources told ESPN that Fisher’s fate was largely decided before that game.
Bjork on Sunday night said he called interim Texas A&M president Gen. Mark Welsh after the Aggies’ loss to Ole Miss on Nov. 4 and asked to meet. “The assessment that I delivered was that we are not reaching our full potential,” Bjork said in a news conference. “We are not in the championship conversation and something was not quite right about our direction and the plan. “We should be relevant on the national scene.”
