Temple Owls release coach who went 12-20 over last three seasons

MichelNovember 30, 2021Updated:January 19, 2024

Temple Owls football coach Rod Carey has been let go after three terrible seasons.

Carey’s 12-20 record was probably the main reason why he was sacked by the Owls, as he recorded 8 of his 12 victories at Temple in his first season, and just three wins this season (3-9).

Thad Ward, their wide receivers coach/pass game coordinator will serve as interim coach.

The Owls hired a new athletic director in Arthur Johnson last month, who had previously been a senior associate athletic director at Texas.
“It’s never an easy decision to replace a head coach,” said Johnson in a statement. “The past two seasons have not been easy with the challenges of the pandemic. I want to thank Rod for staying committed to our student-athletes and wish him and his family well in their next chapter.”

As Temple’s last four coaches – Al Golden, Steve Addazio, Matt Rhule and Geoff Collins – all left for Power 5 opportunities, Rod Carey is the first Owls coach to be fired since Bobby Wallace in 2005.

Before coming to Temple, Carey coached Northern Illinois, where he went 52-30 with two conference titles and two division titles.

Here’s some feedback:
